A broad objective of the water conservation strategy for the industrial
water users sector is to ensure that industrial water users (including mining
and power generation) utilise water more efficiently for their own benefit.
A first step in the process is to understand and know quantities of water
that are used for core business (production) as well as the quantities and
composition of "other" water use.
It is known that improvements in water use efficiency, as a spin-off, can
lower energy use and improve raw materials utilisation, which in turn lowers
pollution of the natural environment. This inherently multidisciplinary
undertaking requires full involvement and commitment of the industrial water
user.

It is important to recognise that "of the shelf" solutions are not available.
This implies that each case should be considered on its own merits, taking
cognisance of relevant basic principles governing both the production processes
and the water management and control.
